Are supplementary classes after school really necessary?

Child psychiatrist Alvin Rosenfeld who wrote the book, The Over-scheduled Child, cautions parents about the effects of over-planning a child’s life, which could eventually lead to anxiety, lack of problem-solving skills and lack of creativity, among other problems.

With Singapore relooking it its PSLE scoring system, shouldn’t we also look at its long school hours? Can we move past superficial changes and bring about substantial changes that will improve the quality of life for thousands of Singaporean children?
